Comment on The Harm in the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) by Chris

HST is a rip off. Just view the government's site how they define what a snack is and you will KNOW that it's designed to carve every possible penny out of your pocket.

Product D is a mixture of unsalted peanuts, cashews,
almonds, filberts and Brazil nuts. The nuts are shelled and
the product is sold from bulk bins in specialty food and
health food stores.

Product D is considered to be a snack mixture as it
contains more than one kind of shelled nut. Product D is
taxable.

Just because nuts are mixed doesn't give them the right to take 13% more from you! How does that make any sense?

Product F is a bag of shelled and unsalted and
unseasoned sunflower seeds. The bag contains no other
ingredients.

Product F is not considered to be a snack mixture
because the product contains only type of seed with no
other ingredients. It also is not considered a salty or
savoury snack because the seeds are not salted or
seasoned. Therefore, Product F is a zero-rated basic
grocery.

It's ridiculous to define a food taxable or not by it's ingredients! This is just like the ECO Fees. Somebody in the government has gone ALL out on the HST and ECO fees to define them so perfectly as to create the best confusion.

Salted, or not, mixed, or not, it is still FOOD! We need food to survive, so it is a basic necessity, especially nuts! Doctors recommend eating nuts and seeds for good health.

HST is the beginning of the end,

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/gm/4-3/4-3-e.pdf

How to protest:

1) Don't buy any more salted nuts!! I sure will not. Most salts they use are really bad for you anyway. Buy unrefined Himalayan salt or unrefined sea salt.

Also make sure unsalted nuts don't have HST when you buy them!! Some stores charged HST even for unsalted nuts!! I don't know why!

2) Don't buy ice-cream. All store ice-cream is poison anyway.

Buy fruit and blend it, then add some milk(organic!) or yogurt and put it in the freezer in plastic shapes which you can get from Wal-mart. Best ice-cream ever, HST FREE!

You will save $$ and live healthier avoiding most snacks they taxed anyway!! The exception being nuts.

Of course HST has far greater reach than food, I just hate to see food taxed.

Thanks Candice. At times it is overwhelming but all we can do is continue to speak up, which is the subject of the post I just completed. I so appreciate your feedback.

Great post, Erica. This reminds of me of the outrage over state officials in PA who held a secret meeting and gave themselves a pay raise back in 2005. It also happened in July.

Maybe it's the summer heat. ;-)

And we are far from finished sending the message Erica. Between the court case and recall we are in for a fun ride the next few months. All governments beware! This will happen to you if you try this.

Cultural identity cannot include the denial of the most basic human right, which is, as you point out, the right to life. I think this happens because of cultural values that are based upon the denial of these basic rights, the rights of the individual, and in particular in these cultures, the rights of women. Thanks for your comment Kellie.

This was such a horrible story and one that has a similar outome with a lovely young lady from Kitimat, BC in which her father murdered her because of her choice of lifestyle (and boyfriend). It is difficult to imagine how this could happen. While I think it is important to recognize one's cultural identity; it is also important to recongize the rights of this country and the right to life MUST be protected.

Thank you Jean for sharing with me. Just as this is the first time you say you have responded to a blog like this, this was the first time I have written such a personal post. I sat down to work that day and just felt compelled to write it. I know it was the right decision from the responses I have received. I am sorry for your loss but celebrate your good fortune in meeting a wonderful, kind, bright and compassionate woman like Kirsten, ( I have put 2 and 2 together and figured out you are talking about my fab friday pal). I only hope that I too will someday be fortunate enough to meet someone else that I will want to share my life with, warm regards, Erica

Hi Erica, my condolences to you and your daughter on David's passing 8 years ago. This is the first time that I am responding to a private, personal and powerful blog such as this. It has moved me to tears and has also made me realize that the grief is everlasting and is part of my life as well.

This blog was sent to me by my fiance Kirsten, whom I love very much and would like to spend the second half of my life as her husband. I am a widower since January 17, 2009. My wife's name was Carol, she died peacefully of brain cancer, and in 2009 she would have turned 50 and we would have celebrated our 30th anniversary. Even as I right this, it all seems so surreal. There are moments such as this when I realize that there is part of me that is not alright, that the dispare and grief that sometimes arises cannot simply be put aside or covered up as I sometimes try to do. That raw emotions continue to exist close to the surface and deep in my heart.

To Kirsten, the new love in my life... you are my inspiration, soul-mate, lover, my comfort, my warm blanket and the custodian of my heart during my deepest and darkest grieving moments. I am truly blessed with you in my life and believe that with your love I will feel whole again.

Erica, thank for the courage to write this heartfelt message about you and David. It sounds like he was a great and wonderful person!
